Instructional Designer

The Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Davidson College seeks an Instructional Designer to join our collaborative and forward-thinking organization. The Instructional Designer supports the Hurt Hub’s mission to provide access and exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship to all as well as supports the college’s purpose in developing disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service.

Top candidates will have “fun doing the impossible” and will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, enjoying the process of testing, learning and iterating to develop exceptional initiatives to help fulfill Davidson’s statement of purpose and to pursue the expansion of a liberal arts education outside our campus.

The chosen candidate will help lead the successful implementation of experimentation and instructional design initiatives that engage with learners outside of Davidson’s residential campus within an online learning paradigm. This position will support the team in designing, building, and optimizing digital learning programming and online learning initiatives.

The position requires strong knowledge of learning theories, instructional design, broad experience with digital scholarship tools, and a firm commitment to open pedagogy and the design of inclusive learning environments.

This position is encouraged to be involved in the Liberal Arts Collaborative for Digital Innovation (LACOL) consortium, promoting innovative teaching, learning, and research in the liberal arts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Consult with instructors on instructional design needs: design, create, revise and structure content, activities, and materials for digital and blended courses with a focus on critical instructional delivery methods that are best suited for the learning environment and student experience.
  • Collaborate with partners including producers, product developers, and course staff to support, develop, and design content for Davidson’s edX initiative, meeting the project’s goals and ensuring high caliber work product that aligns with Davidson’s mission and vision.
  • Author, maintain, and promote documentation, guides, and resources as related to open educational practices.
  • Collaborate with others on the Hurt Hub team and college partners to develop and implement best practices and processes for instructional design.
  • Provide instructional design to digital learning instructors to promote the effective use of technology in instruction.
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment of instruction, services, programs, and other Hurt Hub initiatives.
  • Articulate learning objectives and curating alignment to content design strategy and assessments.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Engage in continuous professional development and activities; actively participate in professional networks to maintain current knowledge of best practices and exploration of future trends.
  • Actively participate on working groups, project teams, and Hurt Hub committees as they arise.
  • Maintain updated knowledge through partnership with the library’s digital learning team in order to maintain awareness of open educational resource initiatives for faculty.
  • Research emerging technologies for instruction and digital scholarship.
  • Utilize learning analytics and metrics to inform course design and maintenance processes.
  • Oversee and manage student employees, such as Gig-Hub consultants, to provide additional support to project needs on an as-needed basis.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Professional certification or advanced degree in instructional design, educational technology, librarianship, online teaching and learning, or related field.
  • At least two years of progressively responsible experience in instructional design, with in-depth knowledge of pedagogical principles and practices.
  • Proficiency with applications and technologies used in teaching, learning, and scholarship, including experience with learning management systems, website design, and core digital scholarship tools.
  • Commitment to continuous assessment and improvement with experience identifying, establishing, and reporting on learning, project, and team-based metrics and outcomes.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical colleagues and clients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Commitment to open pedagogical practices.
  • Experience with programming, multimedia and web development.
  • Understanding and experience with design thinking methodology.
  • High level of comfort with navigating and interacting in online spaces.
  • Previous knowledge and experience in a higher education environment.
  • Curiosity towards experimentation and rapid iteration within Lean Startup principles.
