Davidson College has an immediate opportunity for temporary staff in its Dining Service operation. This opportunity is expected to continue until May 2018. Successful performance in the temporary role would position the candidate to be considered favorably for a long-term regular position.
The Davis Cafe is a quick service dining facility on campus, serving meals to students, faculty, staff and guests 7 days per week. The Dining Service Worker will perform duties that include, but are not limited to producing food to order or prep cooking, stock deliveries and maintain storage areas, wash dishes, mop floors, and take out trash.
Applicants must be able to work a flexible schedule. The Cafe schedules staff according to the needs of the business. Work schedules are not fixed and may change from week to week. Evening and weekend shifts are mandatory. There are periods of down time when work is not available. Examples of these include winter holiday break and spring break.
A typical work schedule during the academic year would be 4-5 days a week, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm or 4:00 pm - 12:30 am with a half hour meal break during the shift, but other time periods could be scheduled based on the needs of the unit. Dining Services provides complementary meals to staff during their work shifts.
Basic Function –
The Dining Service Worker provides general support to the cook line and prep kitchen in the Cafe by producing food to order or prep cooking, stocking deliveries and maintaining storage areas, washing dishes, mopping floors, and taking out trash.
Essential Functions –
- Assists with food preparation and restocking of service areas as needed.
- Prepares assigned work area for meal service.
- Cleans the dining facility, which includes sweeping, mopping, taking trash to dumpster.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Have a commitment to fast and friendly service. Be responsive to customer needs, speed of service and quality of product.
Working Conditions –
Kitchen environment with exposure to sharp utensils, stoves, ovens, fryers, steam tables & dishwashing equipment; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; exposure to hot/cold areas, hazardous chemicals or cleaning solutions & danger of slippery floors or work areas. Staff are required to provide their own work pants and non-slip shoes, Dining Services will provide shirts for staff.
Required Qualifications -
Although prior food service experience and knowledge is helpful, it is not an initial job requirement. We will train an employee who is willing to learn, reliable in attendance, interacts well with other people, has good customer service skills, displays consistency with assigned duties and demonstrates a desire to help coworkers and customers.
