The associate director of alumni and family engagement is responsible for designing, planning and executing policies and programs aimed at increasing engagement of underrepresented and under-engaged constituency groups among the alumni and family populations. These include but are not limited to women, people of color, first generation alums and families, LGBTQIA+ alums, and alums and families with disabilities. Specifically, the Associate Director will directly support the goals and development of the following networks: Davidson Black alumni network (DBAN), Davidson LGBTQ+ alumni network (DLAN), the Davidson Asian South Asian Pacific Islander alumni, network (DASAPIAN), the Latinx alumni network at Davidson (LAND), and the Davidson Jewish Network (DJN). This includes, but is not limited to, planning and implementing events; fundraising initiatives; organizing communications; recruiting, training and supporting new and returning volunteers and serving as a liaison and manager for affinity leadership.
This position will be responsible for increasing the cultural competency and inclusive capacity of all alumni and family engagement initiatives. The associate director should be a strong collaborator, supervisor, volunteer manager and communicator with a vision for alumni and family participation in the life of the college as well as a passion for building networks. This position reports to the Director of Alumni and Family Engagement and supervises the assistant director for early engagement and the assistant director for class affinity.
What you’ll be doing?
The associate director of alumni and family engagement is responsible for:
- Oversight and management of alumni and family engagement diversity and inclusion strategies
- Design events, programming and projects for alums and families which further DEI goals
- Support and maintain key relationships with leadership of five existing alumni affinity networks
- Lead the planning and execution of annual affinity events, reunions and programs. This includes but is not limited to milestone affinity reunions and affinity network reunions.
- Create and manage a multi-channel communications plan that delivers needed information for affinity efforts and DEI strategies such as e-newsletters, website updates, direct mail and event invitations.
- Collaborate with campus partners to enhance affinity-specific programming that highlights and celebrates alumni and student connections (examples include Msaada Mentorship program, identity-based commencement programming, etc.)
- Partner with colleagues to help drive diversity and inclusion efforts within College Relations and the Office of Alumni and Family Engagement
- Support and staff College Relations and Alumni and Family Engagement events such as Reunion Weekend, Wildcat Weekend, Commencement events, etc.
- Supervise assistant director of class affinity and assistant director of early engagement
- Coordinate the programming for the Avant Garde, 55th and 60th reunion
Education and Certifications:
A bachelor's degree or relevant experience or certification.
- The ideal candidate will have experience in higher education, alumni and/or constituent relations, volunteer management, public relations, event planning, nonprofit administration and/or related fields. Three or more years of experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership and outcomes in advancing strategies to increase equity and inclusion, including increasing capacity for DEI efforts among staff and volunteers.
- Strong desire and ability to work effectively with persons from diverse generational, religious, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.
- Experience coaching others and driving results.
- Creativity, innovation and strong track record of developing effective partnerships.
- High degree of initiative and ability to work independently as well as with teams.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Comfort in a Web-based software environment, previous experience using basic Microsoft programs (such as Excel and Word) and the willingness and ability to learn new software platforms.

Flexible Work Location
College Relations has a flexible work location program in line with the College’s telecommuting policy. This position is eligible for partial flexibility in work location, during non-event days, as determined with the position’s manager and reviewed regularly through our performance management processes. Candidates should expect to maintain a residence within commuting distance of the Charlotte metro area. An initial campus orientation period (of several weeks to months) worked from the office may be required. This policy is reviewed periodically.
