A Gallery and Collection Coordinator is needed to assist the Gallery Director with day-to-day gallery activities, management and maintenance of gallery collections.
Essential Functions: The Gallery and Collection Coordinator plays an intrinsic role in the maintenance, performance, and success of the Van Every/Smith Galleries, which ultimately serves the mission of Davidson College. The Galleries provide a challenging forum for the presentation, interpretation, and discussion of primarily contemporary artworks in all media for students and members of the Davidson community, as well as for national and international visitors to the campus. An ongoing series of exhibitions and lectures by visiting artists and scholars nurture individual thinking, develop visual literacy, and inspire a lifelong commitment to the arts.
The Gallery and Collection Coordinator assists the Gallery Director/Curator with various tasks as needed to support the mission of the Van Every/Smith Galleries and Davidson College including but not limited to: maintenance and assessment of the permanent art collection; planning of exhibition-related events and programming to engage students, faculty, and the local community; and various administrative tasks.
Tasks include, but are not limited to:
Exhibitions: Schedule artist residencies/visits; research artists; assist with installation, shipping, and general logistics of exhibition creation; limited in-house design, including signage, publicity, and website/social media updates. The Gallery and Collection Coordinator will keep track of incoming loans and take an active role in the scheduling and administration of large video wall in the E. Craig Wall Academic Center.
Programming: Assists with tours of the permanent art collection including campus sculpture; assists with various programs and events including lectures, gallery receptions, artist visits, etc.
Collection: The Gallery and Collection Coordinator maintains the permanent art collection using Embark database. Duties include creating and maintaining object records, including basic cataloging and object condition reporting; assisting with researching works in the collection; and aiding students, faculty, curators and scholars with research and use of the permanent art collection around campus. Additionally, the Gallery and Collection Coordinator works closely with the Art in Office program. Position also helps supervise the gallery internship and work-study programs, and assists the Director/Curator with various tasks related to grants.
Additional Functions: The Gallery and Collection Coordinator assists with planning an annual art trip hosted by the Art Collection Advisory Committee. Additional duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of experience required. Knowledge of general art history and experience in a museum or gallery with art collection required. Demonstrated intermediate computer skills in Word and Excel; required proficiency in PhotoShop, art collection database; and general web design maintenance. Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
Reports to: Director/Curator of Van Every/Smith Galleries
Working Conditions: Museum environment. Requires close visual concentration for extended periods of time and ability to lift 20 lbs. Required to work some evenings and weekends at specified times during the year.
Special Instructions to Applicants: This is a part-time, 20 hours per week, 12 months per year position. Some weeks, an additional 5 hours per week will be granted related to the video wall.
