Description

BASIC FUNCTION: Provide oversight of day to day operations activities of Freedom Schools program at summer site.  Support implementation of Davidson College Student Development paradigm at summer site by managing all site logistics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Coordinate the day to day operations of Freedom Schools by:

    • Communicating and implementing the daily schedule for Freedom Schools
    • Maintain accurate site specific documentation and paperwork
    • Select and implement site procedure for activity transitions and dismissal
    • Coordinate afternoon activities including proper set up and scheduling etc and provide support during afternoon activities
    • Submit timely and accurate site supply requests
    • Maintain site inventory (snacks and supplies)
    • Facilitate positive mutual use of community partner space
    • Coordinate all site volunteers
    • Communicate and implement Davidson College/Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools selected theme at summer site
    • Given existing framework of Freedom Schools Finale, plan Finale logistics and connect with SLI’s periodically to ensure that selected projects are on target for presentation
  • Maintain positive communications with Scholars, Servant Leader Interns, Parents, Co Site Coordinator, and the Director by:
    • Creating an inclusive environment that is respectful of a variety of cultures
    • Develop weekly newsletter for parents and manage social media accounts
    • Participating in enthusiastic daily Harambee celebrations
    • Warmly greeting Scholars each morning during arrival
    • Interacting with Scholars during meals
    • Building relationships with Parents during periodic meetings and daily dismissal
    • Communicating parent observations/suggestions to the Director.
  • In partnership with Co- Site Coordinator:
    • Facilitates local trainings part 1 and part 2 for SLI
    • Facilitating group problem solving during daily debriefing sessions with SLI’s and co-plan debriefing sessions with Co Site Coordinator (Logistics)
    • Coordinate meal times with set up, clean up, and organizing volunteers
    • Delegating site tasks to SLI’s as appropriate and assist SLI Floater when necessary
    • Assist with coordinating field trips and hosting Harambe readers
    • Assist Co-Site Coordinator as needed
    • Communicate regularly with program Director and Co Site Coordinator
  • Attend all FS events including local training, debriefing, two parent meetings and program Orientation and Finale:
    • Plan and facilitate two parent meeting workshops
    • Assist with local training part 1 and part 2

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 1-3 years of experience with administrative support
  • Detail Oriented
  • Experience with working with parents
  • Understanding of volunteer coordination
  • Strong interpersonal skills and programming skills
  • Familiarity with the Freedom Schools Program
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to take initiative with limited guidance
  • An understanding of and sensitivity to individual cultural history, diverse educational needs, and children’s advocacy is essential
  • Enthusiasm for the Children’s Defense Fund (www.childrensdefense.org) and its Freedom Schools program (www.freedomschools.org)
  • Ability to motivate others
  • Ability to think critically and analytically
  • Exhibit appropriate behavior and positive attitude; model a mature and professional demeanor

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Final candidate must submit an authorization for a background check for criminal and child protective findings
  • Candidate must be available for Freedom Schools’ local trainings and summer dates.
  • National Training Dates: March 20-24 (negotiable)
  • Pre Local Training Dates: May 23-24 
  • Local Training 1 Dates- May 28-May 30
  • Local Training 2 – June 10-14
  • Freedom School Program Dates  June 17- July 26

Travel, lodging and meals are covered for national training.  

WORKING CONDITIONS: Temporary, Nine-week summer program. Office/classroom environment.  Moderate outdoor activity required.
